Private label now owns 52% of UK grocery sales. Here's why SME FMCG suppliers are losing range reviews — and the six-point system that fixes it.
97 percent of consumers now read online reviews before choosing a local business, according to BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey. The uncomfortable twist is that trust in those reviews is sliding: only 49 percent of consumers say they trust online reviews as much as a personal recommendation from a friend, up slightly from 42 percent in 2025 but nowhere near the 79 percent recorded back in 2020.
Everyone is still reading reviews. Fewer of them believe what they read. For an SME sales process, that combination changes the job.
Most SME sales processes treat reviews as marketing's job, something that happens after the sale, if it happens at all. That misses what is actually going on: in a market where trust in any single review is falling, volume, recency and the salesperson's own follow-through matter more than the star rating itself.
A buyer scanning five reviews from three years ago reads caution, not confidence. A buyer scanning twelve reviews from the last two months, several mentioning the actual person who sold to them, reads a business that is still earning it.
This is not a tactic for the marketing calendar. It is a step inside the sale itself.
"Kevin doesn't just present, he electrifies the room and drives massive, real-world value. He drops game-changing insights and actionable shortcuts that show businesses exactly how to turn everyday customers into raving, loyal fans, and acquire new ones faster than ever thought possible."

Most salespeople skip the ask because it feels like overreach, or because the close already felt like the finish line. It is not the finish line. In a market where buyers trust strangers' words almost as much as their own circle, the review is doing part of the next sale's persuading before that sale even starts.
This is precisely where a sales system, not individual willpower, needs to carry the habit, because habits that rely on feeling confident in the moment do not survive a busy month.
The business owners who close this tab and do nothing will be in the same place this time next year. The ones who build this one habit in will not, and you become the owner whose sales process asks for the review at the right moment.
