Most SME owners track one number: the bank balance. The businesses that compound track four, using Kaplan and Norton's Balanced Scorecard, and catch the problem before it ever reaches the bank account.
Xero Small Business Insights data showed New Zealand small business sales rose 9.8 percent year-on-year in December last year, well above the 6.2 percent long-run average, across more than 144,000 businesses. If your December looks like that this year, congratulations, genuinely. Now ask the question almost nobody asks in the middle of a strong month: what does your pipeline look like for the six weeks after it ends? A busy December fills the calendar and the bank account. It rarely fills the pipeline for January and February, because nobody is prospecting while they are this busy.
Here is the enemy worth naming: growth that feels real because it shows up this month, while quietly borrowing from next quarter. A strong December is often customers buying now rather than later, seasonal demand pulled forward, not new, durable demand created. Owners read a good month as proof the business is growing and relax exactly when they should be building. Then January arrives, the phone goes quiet, and it gets blamed on the economy, the season, anything other than the six weeks in November and December when nobody picked up new business development.
Growing businesses run this check every month regardless of how busy they feel, specifically because busy and growing are not the same thing.
"You make success tangible. Help me go from a wish to reality. Now have clarity of purpose and belief. You made tripling the size of my business go from seeming impossible to really possible."
— Lina, Good Gravy
When the business is genuinely flat out, new business development is the first thing to get dropped, precisely because the pipeline being built now will not show up for six to eight weeks, so skipping it feels free in the moment. It never is. The owners who keep growing through January are not working harder in December. They have a system that keeps a small amount of prospecting running regardless of how busy the rest of the business gets, so nobody has to remember to do it by willpower alone.
If your pipeline for the next six weeks only exists in your head, that's the first system to put on paper. Become the owner who never faces January with an empty diary.
