Most owners do not lack ideas. They lack a weekly rhythm that turns a plan into action. A five-question check, who Making It Happen ($297) suits, who should skip it, and the real next step. Checked 5 November 2026.

Revenue's up on paper. The bank balance isn't. You've checked your pricing twice and it still doesn't add up, so you assume the fix is a few dollars more on the invoice. It usually isn't. In most SME businesses, a shrinking margin isn't a pricing problem — it's a positioning problem. If your marketing never told anyone who you're actually for, every buyer defaults to the cheapest-looking option, and that's the customer you're now stuck serving.

The Enemy: Marketing That Talks To Everyone, And Attracts Whoever's Cheapest

Rising costs are now cited by 44% of US small business owners as a leading source of financial stress (Xero Emotional Tax Return 2026, US, as reported by CPA Practice Advisor). That pressure hits hardest on a margin that was never protected by differentiation in the first place. If your content could be swapped with a competitor's and nobody would notice, you're not marketing a business — you're entering a price war with extra steps.

Obviously Awesome: The Five-Step Fix (April Dunford)

  • Competitive alternatives — What would the customer do without you? Usually not your direct rival — doing nothing, a spreadsheet, a cheaper generalist.
  • Unique attributes — What you genuinely do that those alternatives can't.
  • Value — What that attribute actually lets the customer achieve.
  • Customers who care — The segment that values that outcome most, and will pay for it.
  • Market category — The frame that makes the value obvious in one glance.

"Kevin has some amazing ideas around marketing, things we would have never thought of ourselves. He also helped us through the process of getting into supermarkets. He has gone above and beyond what he needed to!"

The Execution Gap: Why Owners Know This And Still Write Generic Copy

Positioning sounds like a branding exercise, so it gets skipped in favour of "just get a post out." At the NZ talent agency J&L, one sentence did what twenty generic posts couldn't: "We represent New Zealand's finest talent." It passed what agencies call the elevator test — the right clients knew instantly who the agency was for, and so did the wrong ones.

Finding that one sentence rarely happens alone at a laptop. It takes someone outside the business asking "compared to what?" until the real differentiator surfaces — which is a large part of what a second pair of eyes in coaching actually does for marketing.

Do This By 9am Tomorrow

  • Write down what a customer would do if you didn't exist. If the answer is "use a competitor," dig deeper.
  • Name the one outcome only you deliver, in plain language, no jargon.
  • Read your last three posts. If a competitor's name would fit just as well, rewrite the next one for the customer who cares most.

This isn't for the owner chasing every lead who messages — it's for the owner ready to turn some enquiries away on purpose, because they're the wrong fit.

Key Takeaways

  • Diagnose margin loss as a positioning problem before assuming it's a pricing problem.
  • Name the competitive alternative your customer would actually choose if you didn't exist.
  • Write one sentence that passes the elevator test, and build your marketing around it.
  • Expect to turn away some enquiries — that's evidence the positioning is working, not a problem.

This won't make every customer love you — it will make the right ones choose you without comparing you on price. That's the version of growth that actually reaches your bank account.

If you're not sure your marketing would pass the elevator test, that's the first hour we spend together.
