US owners lose 33 working days a year to financial worry, mostly from not knowing their numbers. Here's the 2-number Monday check that closes the gap.

You cancelled the weekend away again. Something always comes up — a staff issue, a client crisis, a decision that "only you" can make. You tell yourself it's temporary, that once this quarter settles down you'll finally get some space back. It's never once settled down, not in years.

If you can't step away long enough to even ask whether a coach is worth it, that's not a reason to skip the question. It's the reason to ask it.

Since 2017 I've coached 200+ businesses one-on-one across 30+ industries, and I've been on both sides of this — the owner who couldn't say no, and the coach helping someone else learn to.

The enemy is "a good owner should be able to do it all"

Nobody says this out loud, but almost every exhausted owner believes it: needing outside help is admitting you can't cope. It's the opposite. The businesses that actually scale past the owner's own ceiling are run by people who got comfortable asking someone else to look at what they couldn't see themselves — not because they were weak, but because one person's view of their own business is always partial.

What a coach is actually for

I used to struggle badly with saying no — to clients, to opportunities, to requests that weren't mine to say yes to. If you say yes to people, you are helping them achieve their goal and you're not achieving yours. I eventually started blocking my own diary, on fixed days, just to protect space to think. None of that happened because I decided to try harder. It happened because something outside my own head — a structure, an accountability point — made it stick.

  • Sees the blind spot — the thing you're too close to the business to notice yourself.
  • Holds the line you set — accountability for the boundary you already know you need.
  • Protects the time nobody else will protect — the thinking space that doesn't happen by accident.

Why owners wait

Owners wait because it feels like admitting defeat, or because "I don't have time to even look into it" feels true. It is true — and it's also exactly the problem a first conversation is for. You don't need to have stepped away to start; you need one conversation that doesn't ask you to solve everything first.

This isn't for you if the idea of someone holding you accountable, out loud, every week, feels worse than staying stuck.

Key takeaways

  • Reframe needing outside help — it's a feature of running a business alone for too long, not a failure of capability.
  • Expect a coach's real job to be seeing what you're too close to see, not working harder on your behalf.
  • Protect your own thinking time with a structure outside your own willpower — it won't happen by accident.
  • Start the conversation before you've stepped away — you don't need to have already solved it.

Kevin works personally with a select group of SME owners to build the accountability and capability that make stepping back far more likely — not accidental.

Most SME owners can describe next year's budget in detail and go quiet the moment you ask about year ten. A UK study of over 1,000 companies found that gap predicts success almost on its own.

Most SME owners build their people plan around courses. The research behind the 70-20-10 model says courses are the smallest lever you have, and it is worth knowing how shaky that research actually is.
