Management Capability Development funding can cover up to half of one-to-one business training for eligible NZ businesses. Here is who qualifies, what it covers, what it does not, and the order to do things in.

Most SME growth strategies aren't wrong because the thinking was lazy. They're wrong because they were built on three or four assumptions nobody ever wrote down, let alone tested — about who the customer is, what they'll pay, how long the sales cycle really takes, or what the team can actually deliver without cracking. If you've ever asked "why isn't my business growing" despite a plan that looked solid on paper, the plan probably wasn't the problem. The assumptions underneath it were.

The Enemy Is Confidence, Not Ignorance

Here's the uncomfortable truth: the more experienced you are, the more assumptions you smuggle into a strategy without testing them. You've been in the industry for years, you know your customers, you trust your gut — and that trust is exactly what stops you interrogating the beliefs your entire growth plan depends on. This isn't a knowledge gap. It's a confidence trap.

The decision scientist Gary Klein built a tool for exactly this problem, used widely in project and strategic planning: the premortem. Instead of asking "will this plan work," you imagine it's twelve months from now and the plan has failed completely — then work backwards to explain why. It sounds simple. It surfaces assumptions that a normal planning session never touches, because nobody wants to be the person raising doubts in the room where everyone is excited about the target.

The Assumption Audit: A Four-Question Framework

Before you commit budget, headcount, or twelve months of momentum to a growth strategy, run every major initiative through four questions:

1. The Customer Assumption — who exactly is buying this, and how do you know?

2. The Price Assumption — has anyone tested that number against a real buyer?

3. The Capacity Assumption — can your team deliver this without the wheels coming off?

4. The Time Assumption — is your timeline based on your best quarter ever, or your average one?

Write the answers down. Then, for each one, ask what evidence you actually have versus what you're hoping is true. Most strategic plans collapse not because the market changed, but because one of these four assumptions was wrong from day one and nobody stress-tested it before the money was spent.

"Talking with Kevin the first time was so valuable and we were learning so much. Within an hour Kevin had us thinking about our business and our goals in a totally different way. In fact we were supposed to be catching a flight but we decided it was more important that we continued the meeting with Kevin."

Why Owners Skip This — And Why That's the Real Obstacle

Owners know how to test assumptions. What most don't have is someone in the room whose job is to keep asking "how do you actually know that" until the answer stops being a feeling and starts being evidence. That's not a criticism — it's genuinely difficult to challenge your own thinking from inside your own business. It's why an outside perspective, one that has built and sold multiple companies and sat across the table from buyers who ask exactly these questions during due diligence, changes the outcome. The Simple-Growth System™ builds the Assumption Audit into every strategic planning session for precisely this reason — not as a formality, but because it's where the real risk in a growth plan usually hides.

Key Takeaways

  • Run a premortem before committing budget
  • Name three real customers for every growth assumption
  • Test price and capacity assumptions against evidence, not hope
  • Build the Assumption Audit into your planning calendar

If your growth strategy has never been stress-tested by someone whose job is to find the weak assumption before the market does, that's the first thing Kevin does with you.

...and you become the owner whose growth plan rests on assumptions you have tested.
