Management Capability Development funding can cover up to half of one-to-one business training for eligible NZ businesses. Here is who qualifies, what it covers, what it does not, and the order to do things in.
Most SME owners start coaching expecting a steady upward line — a bit better every week. What actually happens, almost every time, is different: things get clearer and harder before they get easier, usually somewhere around week four to six. If nobody warns you about that dip, it's easy to mistake it for evidence the coaching isn't working, right at the point it's actually starting to.
The mental model most owners bring to coaching is borrowed from fitness apps and productivity hacks: input effort, get steady output. Real change in a business doesn't work that way, because the first thing a good coach does isn't add new tactics — it's surface the decisions, avoidance patterns, and structural gaps you've been managing around for years. That surfacing feels like things getting worse before you've built anything new to replace what you're now seeing clearly for the first time. Owners who expect a smooth line quit in week five, exactly when the discomfort is doing its job.
This is why "what does a business coach do" is the wrong first question. The better one is "what will the first 90 days actually feel like" — because the owners who know the shape of the curve in advance are the ones who stay in it long enough to get to the other side.
Every engagement that actually produces results moves through the same three phases, in roughly the same order:
1. Weeks 1–3: The Diagnostic Phase
2. Weeks 4–6: The Trough
3. Weeks 7–12: The Build
Knowing which phase you're in changes everything about how you interpret week five. It's the difference between quitting right before the payoff and pushing through to it.

Nobody tells owners about the trough before they're in it. Coaching gets sold — reasonably — on the outcomes at the end, not the discomfort in the middle. So when week five arrives and feels harder than week one, the natural conclusion is that the wrong coach was chosen or the wrong system was bought, when in fact it's simply the predictable shape of real change. The obstacle isn't the coaching. It's the absence of a map showing owners exactly where they are on the curve, and someone experienced enough to say "this is normal, keep going" with genuine authority rather than reassurance for its own sake.
If you're weighing up whether a coach is worth it, the real question is whether you understand what the first 90 days genuinely feel like — most programmes never tell you.
...and you become the owner who stays the course through week five, because you knew it was coming.
