NZ AI workshops range from a four-hour morning to a residential programme. Here is what the public prices show, what to ask before you book, and how to check whether government co-funding applies. Checked 6 November 2026.

You paid the supplier, the staff, the landlord and the tax bill this month. You didn't pay yourself — again — and you've gotten good at not mentioning it, not even to the person who shares your bank account.

If you're wondering whether that's normal, here's the honest answer: it's common, it's rarely spoken about out loud, and it's exactly the kind of thing owners will tell a coach before they'll tell anyone else — because a coach isn't going to worry the way family does, and isn't going to judge the way a mate might.

I know what it's like to be the one holding it together quietly. It's part of why, even after founding nine companies, I still hired a coach of my own.

The Silence Isn't Strength. It's The Thing Costing You The Most.

The villain here isn't the cash flow gap itself — it's the belief that admitting it means admitting failure, so you carry it alone instead of naming it to someone who could actually help. That silence is doing more damage than the number on the bank statement. It's the thing keeping you up, not the thing itself.

You're far from the only one. Xero's 2023 Money Matters research found 46% of New Zealand small business owners weren't paying themselves — 60% of sole traders — and 70% had felt anxious about their business in the previous twelve months. This isn't a you problem. It's an unspoken-owner problem.

Why I Hired A Coach Of My Own

Years into building and selling businesses, I brought in an Icehouse coach to accelerate my own growth — not because I'd run out of ideas, but because I needed someone who'd ask the question I kept avoiding asking myself. I've been the client too, sitting on the other side of exactly this kind of silence.

The value wasn't a clever framework. It was one person, outside the business and outside the family, who was allowed to ask directly: "Have you actually paid yourself this month?" — and expect a real answer. That question, said out loud and repeated often enough, changes behaviour faster than any spreadsheet.

"Keeping me sane and focused during uncertain times."

— Rachel Williams, Icehouse Coaching Programme

Why Owners Wait So Long To Say It Out Loud

The real obstacle isn't pride, exactly — it's that saying it out loud to a partner feels like handing them a worry they can't fix, so you protect them from it instead. That protection quietly becomes isolation, and isolation is heavier to carry than the actual number.

A coach can hold that conversation without it becoming a crisis at the dinner table, because fixing it is literally the job. This isn't for you if you're determined to solve it entirely alone before you'll admit it exists. It's for owners ready to say the number out loud to someone who'll help you change it rather than just feel it with you.

It also isn't a one-off conversation. The owners who actually turn this around tend to come back to the same question week after week, with someone checking in, until paying themselves properly stops being the exception and starts being how the business is simply run.

You don't have to have this figured out before you talk about it. Saying it to one person, properly, is usually the fastest route back to paying yourself what the work is actually worth.

Key Takeaways

  • Recognise that not paying yourself is common, not a personal failure — 46% of NZ owners report the same.
  • Say the number out loud to one person who can actually help change it.
  • Separate the cash flow problem from the silence around it — the silence is doing more damage.
  • Ask for the direct question each week, rather than hoping someone notices.

If you haven't paid yourself properly in months and haven't told anyone, that's a conversation worth having with someone who isn't your family.
