41% of US owners say the cash-flow gap between money in and bills out is their top stressor. Here's why better follow-up won't fix it, and the three moves that stop the chase before it starts.
You paid the team on Friday. You paid the landlord, the supplier, the insurance renewal you'd forgotten about. Then you looked at what was left for you, and quietly decided it could wait another month. It's been a few months now.
If that's familiar, here's the plain answer: paying yourself properly isn't a reward you earn once the business is "ready." It's a discipline you build in now, because the business will never announce that it's ready on its own.
You're genuinely not the only one doing this. Xero's 2023 Money Matters research in New Zealand found 46% of small business owners weren't paying themselves — rising to 60% among sole traders. Nearly half the room you'd be standing in at any NZ business event is doing exactly what you're doing.
Here's the enemy worth naming honestly: the belief that a good owner always puts the business ahead of themselves, every single time, as proof of how committed they are. It sounds noble. It also means the person carrying the most risk and doing the most hours is the one person with no guaranteed return on any of it — which isn't sustainable, and isn't actually what commitment is supposed to look like.
I've founded or co-founded nine companies, some of them very successful, some of them genuine failures. A big part of my job now is helping owners grow, but just as much of it is helping them avoid the mistakes I made getting there. One of the things on my own list, even now, is buying my mum a house — a very ordinary, very personal reason to want the business to actually pay me, not just pay everyone around me. That's not a confession. It's the point. You're allowed to be building this for your own life, not just for everyone else's invoices.
"Kevin has been a game changer for us. I had tried a couple of high-profile US entrepreneur programs but found these just talked about 'mindset', whereas Kevin gives practical advice to grow your business that you can implement immediately."
— Brett Abeille
Knowing you should pay yourself and actually doing it are two different things, because the decision never arrives with a clean month to make it in. There's always a reason this particular month is tight. The owners who fix this don't wait for a clean month — they build the habit into a tight one, because a tight month is exactly when the business most needs to prove it can support the person running it, not just everyone around them.
This isn't for you if your business genuinely can't cover a basic owner wage yet and you know the real numbers behind that — sometimes that's just where you are, and forcing it early does more harm than good. But if the business can afford it and you simply haven't made yourself the priority, that's a decision, not a circumstance, and it's one you can change this month.
You can build a business that pays you properly, on a fixed day, without the guilt. It won't happen by deciding to feel less guilty about it — it happens by building the habit in, the same way you'd build in any other payment you've decided truly matters.
If you can't remember the last time you paid yourself on purpose, that's where a good coaching conversation starts.
