NZ AI workshops range from a four-hour morning to a residential programme. Here is what the public prices show, what to ask before you book, and how to check whether government co-funding applies. Checked 6 November 2026.
A competitor just launched something close enough to yours that a customer mentioned it to you, almost as an aside. Your stomach dropped a little. You don't actually know what makes you different — not in a sentence you could say out loud at a dinner party.
Here's the answer to the question behind that feeling: a competitor can copy your price, your product and your process within a season. What they can't copy is your reason for existing, because most businesses never write it down in the first place.
Working on 60+ global brands at DDB, Ogilvy and Saatchi & Saatchi taught me this on brands with far bigger budgets than yours. McDonald's didn't win on having the best burger. It won on knowing exactly what it was for, everywhere, every time.
The villain isn't your competitor. It's the habit of answering "what do you do" with a list of features and services — the one thing every competitor can match by next quarter. When your differentiation lives in what you sell, you're in a race you can't permanently win. Someone cheaper, faster or newer is always one announcement away.
Leave that unfixed and the cost compounds quietly: your marketing starts sounding like theirs, your pricing conversations get harder, and new customers can't explain to a friend why they chose you over the business down the road. That's not a traffic problem. It's a why problem.
Simon Sinek's Golden Circle makes one simple claim: most businesses communicate from the outside in — What we do, How we do it, and if there's time, Why we do it. The businesses customers actually choose communicate from the inside out.
I use an elevator test to check if a Why actually works: could you say it to a stranger between floors and have them repeat it back correctly? One talent agency I worked with landed on "We represent New Zealand's finest talent." Six words. It passed the test — and it's the line that gets repeated at industry events years later, not the services page.
"Kevin D'Ambros-Smith was the first coach that helped us and he was so great. He understood the business straightaway, was able to identify some of the areas where we could grow it, and some of the things to park. I don't think the ROW branding would be nearly as strong without his input. He was just brilliant."
— Sarah McGuinness, Founder & CEO, Revolutionaries of Wellbeing (ROW)
Here's the real obstacle: most owners can feel their Why but have never been made to write one sentence and defend it. It stays a vague instinct instead of a usable asset, because nobody's sat across the table and asked the right five questions until the answer stopped being vague.
That's a different job to running your business day to day, which is exactly why it usually takes an outside pair of eyes to pull it out of you. This isn't for you if you're happy competing on price forever — it's for owners who want a reason customers choose them that no competitor can simply copy next month.
You don't need a rebrand. You need one sentence, tested on a stranger, that survives the elevator ride. Get that right and the competitor who worried you stops being the headline in your head.
If you can't say your Why in one sentence a stranger would repeat correctly, that's the first thing we fix.
