Sound familiar?

What you’re telling yourself, and what’s usually going on.

It’s 11pm. The laptop is still open, the bank app is open beside it, and you’re asking the question that never quite goes away: where is the money actually going?Illustrative scene

Most owners are sure they know the problem. The real one is often sitting just behind it.

“I need more leads.”Often the leads are fine. The follow-up, the offer or the price is where they leak out. More leads just leak the same way.
“My marketing isn’t working.”Usually it isn’t clear who it’s for, or why you’re the obvious choice.
“Cash is tight.”Growth can hide thin margin, slow invoicing or the wrong customers.
“I can’t find good people.”A role nobody has clearly defined is hard for anyone to fill well.
“I never have time.”If every decision runs through you, you’re the bottleneck, not your calendar.
“We’re too small for strategy.”Usually the opposite. Small firms have the least room for wasted effort, and a one-page plan lets you change direction on Monday.
What waiting costs you

Another year of Sundays lost to admin. Another quarter spent fixing the wrong thing. Would you rather find the real constraint now, or in twelve months?

The Age of the Owner©

The old rule said bigger wins. That rule is breaking.

The enemy isn’t a competitor. It’s the belief that you have to get bigger before you can win.

The old ruleScale decided who won. Big budgets, big teams, big systems. Small businesses were told to wait their turn.
What’s changedSystems that once needed a big team now fit a small one. And the one thing nobody can buy is what you already have: local knowledge of your customers and your patch.
What it means for youYou don’t need more noise or more theory. You need the right thing fixed first, with the right help behind you.

Where the three meet.

The sweet spot is The Age of the Owner©.

Back yourself. Run the system.

How it looks in real life

One number changed the whole season.

A mountain-bike park earned money eleven different ways, and the owner couldn’t see where to push. So we worked backwards from the target. 730 season passes, 300 coming back, 430 still to sell in ten weeks. That’s six a day.

“Suddenly you can get on the phone and make six sales a day.”

Then the mechanic needed $500 a day. His one job each morning: greet 50 customers and offer a free bike check. Repairs went up, rentals went up and accidents came down.

The constraint was never effort. It was knowing which number to chase. You could find yours in one call.

Where the thinking comes from

Personalised marketing, before it had a name.

Kevin founded Motherbase Media, the only company in New Zealand specialising in direct, personalised communication with new mums and household shoppers. Banks, insurers and brands like Heinz, Kimberly-Clark, Mattel and Hasbro used it to reach parents by life stage and their child’s age, from first mortgages and life cover to nappies and age-matched toys.

It taught Kevin the lesson at the heart of Simple-Growth: know exactly who your customer is and what moment they’re in, then speak to them personally. That once took a corporate budget. Now AI puts it within reach of every owner.

A lesson I paid for

It cost us over $1 million.

My wife and I went into business with a partner our advisory board introduced. On paper he was perfect, and he had the Bentley, the Ferrari and the yacht on the harbour to prove it.

We didn’t ask enough questions, because we trusted the people who recommended him. His ethics weren’t ours. We stopped sleeping. When we tried to get out, the contract told us what that would cost: well over $1 million. It nearly took us down, and it took years to rebuild and win back our customers.

“Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn.”

Here’s what I’d tell you before you sign anything: do real due diligence on who you’re going into business with. If it doesn’t add up, back out. Take advice, then make your own call, because the people advising you aren’t the ones whose house is on the line.

That’s why I do this. I’ll help you grow faster, and help you avoid the mistakes we made.

Is this for you?

Right owner, right time.

This is for you if…

  • You’re ready to act on one clear thing, not collect another list of ideas.
  • You want to be challenged honestly, by someone who has been there.
  • You’d rather have a practical plan than theory or guru talk.

This probably isn’t for you if…

  • You’re looking for a magic bullet or an overnight fix.
  • You’d rather keep doing what you’ve always done and hope.
  • You want someone to do it for you while you stay out of it.
