68% of US owners have delayed a major decision purely from fear of getting it wrong. Here's the 15-minute premortem test that gets you unstuck before you spend another dollar on it.

Choose a business coach on what you can verify before you speak to anyone: who they are for, what it costs, how you start, and what proof they show. This guide checks five well-known options against seven of those things, using only their own public pages, and shows its working so you can check it yourself.

A disclosure first: Simple-Growth publishes this guide, and Kevin D'Ambros-Smith, who runs Simple-Growth, is one of the options in the table. He is not neutral, so this guide does not rank coaches or say who is best. It shows what each provider makes easy to check, and who each suits. An earlier Simple-Growth page ranked 25 famous names with no stated method. This guide replaces that approach. Checked 2 November 2026. Market: New Zealand, with global options noted.

What Should You Check Before You Hire A Business Coach?

Most owners choose a coach on a recommendation and a good feeling. Both matter. But a good feeling is easier to trust when you have also checked these seven things:

  • Who it is for. Does the provider say which size, turnover or stage of business it works with?
  • A price or fee you can compare. Even a range helps you budget before you book a call.
  • A free way to start. A call, an assessment or a tool you can use before you commit.
  • A clear first step. You should know what happens after you click.
  • Proof with a number. A result, a survey score or a client count, with its source.
  • A way to start in New Zealand. Local presence, local contact or a local programme.
  • A stated guarantee. What happens if the work does not deliver.

How Do Five Coaching Options Compare On What You Can Verify?

The table gives a tick for something clearly shown on the page we read, a half for something partly shown, and a dash for something not shown on that page. A dash means "not on the page we read", not "does not exist". The total is out of seven. It measures how much a buyer can check before talking to anyone. It does not measure how good the coaching is. Options are listed alphabetically.

Method: one public page per provider, read on 2 November 2026 (links below). Simple-Growth is scored on the same seven checks by its own publisher, so weigh that result accordingly and tell us if we have missed anything on any page. Prices exclude any government co-funding.

Who Does Each Option Suit?

  • You run a very small business, or are starting out, and want a low-cost mentor. Business Mentors NZ. A $295 + GST fee for 12 months is the lowest published price in this table.
  • You turn over $1M to $3M and learn best in a room with other owners. The Icehouse Business Owner Programme. It is group-based and has a published price.
  • You have a leadership team that needs one shared way of working. EOS. Start with its free tools before you pay anyone.
  • You want a franchised coaching network with a free trial period. ActionCOACH. Ask which local coach you would work with, and what the written terms of the guarantee are.
  • You are the owner, you are not sure what is holding the business back, and you want one constraint fixed first. Simple-Growth. It starts with a free 30-minute conversation and a 90-day focus.

None of these is automatically right. Some owners use a mentor for the early years, a programme for the middle, and a coach for the constraint that is left. If you are weighing coach against consultant or mentor, read which one your NZ business actually needs. If ActionCOACH is on your shortlist, read how to choose between ActionCOACH and an independent coach.

Why Does Confidence Not Equal Results Right Now?

In New Zealand, optimism is running ahead of trading. NZIER's September 2026 quarterly survey put net general business confidence at +40, up from +14 in June. Over the same period, firms' own trading activity over the past three months slipped to -1 (NZIER, summarised by Westpac IQ, New Zealand, survey run 9 to 28 September 2026). If you feel confident but your numbers have not moved, that gap is usually a constraint you have not named yet. A good first conversation with any coach should help you name it.

Can Government Funding Help Pay For A Coach?

For some New Zealand businesses, yes. Funding is decided by your Regional Business Partner, never by a coaching provider, and it is not guaranteed. A discovery session with a growth advisor comes first. Our explainer sets out the published rules and where to check them.

Five Questions To Ask Any Coach Before You Say Yes

  • What is the one thing holding my business back right now, and how would we find out?
  • What have you built, run or sold yourself?
  • What is the written total for 12 months, and how do I stop if it is not working?
  • What will be different in 90 days, and how will we both measure it?
  • Can I speak to an owner whose business looks like mine?

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose a business coach?

Check what you can verify first: who they work with, what it costs, how you start and what proof they show. Then put the same five questions to each shortlisted coach and compare the written answers.

Is this a ranking of the best business coaches?

No. It scores how much a buyer can check on each provider's public page. It does not rate coaching quality, and its publisher, Simple-Growth, is one of the options.

How much does a business coach cost in New Zealand?

Published prices in this guide range from $295 + GST for 12 months of mentoring (Business Mentors NZ) to $6,295 + GST for a group programme (The Icehouse). One-to-one coaching is usually quoted by conversation, so ask for a written 12-month total.

Can the government pay for part of my coaching?

Some New Zealand businesses may qualify for co-funding through their Regional Business Partner. It is never guaranteed and is decided by the Regional Business Partner, so speak to them before you commit.

Does Simple-Growth work with owners outside Auckland?

Yes. Kevin coaches in Auckland and online. Book a free conversation and you will leave knowing your likely constraint and what the first 90 days could look like.

Not sure where to start? A 30-minute conversation will tell you, and you are welcome to take the answers to any other provider.
