You're doing the books, the invoicing and the tax, and strategy always loses the fight for your time. Here's the one-hour weekly habit that gets it back, no forty-page plan required.
It's gone midnight, the laptop's still open, and the thought arrives again: I'm not sure I can keep this up. You're not lazy and you're not failing — you're busy, and busy has felt like winning for so long you've stopped checking whether it actually is.
If you want the straight answer to why a business can feel unsustainable even when the top line looks fine, it's usually this: you're tracking one number — can I survive this month — instead of the four that actually tell you if you're winning.
I've founded nine companies. A few did very well. One or two taught me things the hard way, at an hour like this one, the way yours is teaching you right now.
The villain here isn't you and it isn't your market — it's the bank-balance scoreboard. When the only number you check is "is there enough in the account," every week becomes a referendum on your survival, and survival is an exhausting thing to measure your life by. You can be genuinely improving — better margin, happier customers, a stronger team — and still feel like you're drowning, because none of that shows up on the one screen you're watching.
You're not imagining the exhaustion. In Xero's 2023 Money Matters research, 94% of New Zealand small business owners said they weren't reaching their business goals, and 80% reported stress in the previous twelve months. That's not a motivation problem. That's a visibility problem.
Robert Kaplan and David Norton built the Balanced Scorecard for corporates drowning in the same trap — financial tunnel vision. Their argument: the financial result is the last domino to fall, not the first. Three other numbers predict it. Here's the one-person version I build with owners before we touch strategy, marketing or a single dollar of spend:
Four numbers, checked on the same Monday, every week. Not forty KPIs. Four.
"Working with Kevin D'Ambros-Smith has given us the space to pause and reflect — on where we are now, where we want to be and how we get there."
— Gabby Kirk, Papier Hq
Here's the obstacle, and it isn't knowledge. Measuring four numbers every Monday feels like admin, and admin always loses the fight against whichever fire is loudest that day. The real gap isn't information. It's that nobody is checking whether you actually did it.
That's usually the point where a coach earns their fee — not by telling you what to measure, but by being the one person who asks on Monday morning whether you looked. This isn't for you if you want someone else to hold the clipboard while you keep running exactly the way you always have. It's for owners who want the uncomfortable number on the page as much as the comfortable one.
You don't need forty new habits. You need four numbers and the nerve to look at all of them on the same morning. That's a business you can keep up with — not because you're working harder, but because you can finally see whether the hard work is working.
If the only number you're tracking right now is whether you can survive this month, that's the first thing we fix.

New 2026 grocery data shows branded FMCG products are being promoted twice as often as private label — and still losing share and loyalty. Kevin D'Ambros-Smith on why discounting harder is the wrong fix, and what pricing architecture looks like instead.

A 2026 Fed survey of 6,525 small businesses found owner confidence at a 6-year low — while actual revenue, employment and profitability held steady. Why the gap, not the economy, is the real risk for SME and FMCG owners.

Most SME sales forecasts are built by adding up pipeline value — and it's almost always wrong. Here's how exit criteria, deal age, and weighted forecasting fix it.

Most SME roadmaps fail from what they never remove, not what they add. Here's the three-question kill list to run before your next planning cycle — and why pruning, not adding, is what actually frees up growth capacity.

Paid social and search rent attention you don't own. Your email list is the one channel most SMEs already have permission to use — and almost never invest in properly. Here's how to turn it into a real asset.

Most sales training focuses on the pitch and the close. The call is usually already lost in the first five minutes. Here's the agenda-set and diagnostic sequence that fixes it — at the team level, not just for one rep.

Delegation doesn't fail because your team can't do the work — it fails because nobody defined what "done" looked like before the task started. Here's the four-part handoff that fixes it.

Business coaching has borrowed a lot from therapy's language, and it's blurred an important line. A coach uses psychology to find what's blocking you — then converts it into a dated business action, every time. Here's where the line sits.
