ActionCOACH offers a coaching network, the ABoS platform and two free weeks. Simple-Growth is one owner-run coach who finds your constraint first. Here is who each suits, what is public on cost, and six questions to ask. Checked 4 November 2026.

It's 9pm on a Sunday and you're scrolling past three competitors' posts trying to think of something to put up tomorrow, because nothing is scheduled and nothing ever is. This is a story about an owner doing every part of her marketing herself — the posts, the emails, the website copy — with no plan behind any of it, just whatever feels urgent that week.

If that's you, the fix isn't more content. It's that your marketing has been telling the wrong story, with the wrong person playing the lead.

The Brand-As-Hero Habit

Most SME marketing puts the business at the centre of its own story: we do this, we offer that, we've been doing this since. Meanwhile the customer's actual problem never gets named. Donald Miller's StoryBrand framework makes the uncomfortable point plainly: customers don't buy from businesses that cast themselves as the hero of their own story. They buy from guides who help them become the hero of theirs. When you're writing every post yourself at 9pm with no plan, you default to talking about you, because that's the only story you have time to tell.

It isn't a talent problem. Plenty of owners who've never written a word of marketing in their lives can still tell a customer exactly what their business fixed for them, over coffee, without trying. The moment it has to go on a page or a post, the story quietly swaps back to being about the business. That swap is the whole leak.

Make The Customer The Hero, Not The Business

You don't fix this with more content ideas — you fix it by writing the story once, properly, and repeating it everywhere:

  • Name their problem, in their words. Not your category description — the actual sentence a customer would say out loud.
  • Cast yourself as the guide, not the hero. You have a plan. They have the problem. Every piece of copy should make that clear in the first line.
  • Give one next step, everywhere. One call to action per post, per page, per email — not five competing for attention.

"Kevin D'Ambros-Smith was the first coach that helped us and he was so great. He understood the business straightaway, was able to identify some of the areas where we could grow it, and some of the things to park. I don't think the ROW branding would be nearly as strong without his input. He was just brilliant."

— Sarah McGuinness, Founder & CEO, Revolutionaries of Wellbeing (ROW)

Why "Just Post More" Never Fixes It

Most owners treat inconsistent marketing as a content problem — they need more ideas, a bigger calendar, another app. It's actually a structure problem: nobody has written the one sentence the whole business is meant to repeat. Kevin worked on 60+ global brands at DDB, Ogilvy and Saatchi & Saatchi, and the clearest lesson from that career was watching McDonald's build marketing that never got reinvented overnight. Every piece answered one customer problem with one consistent story, built once and repeated relentlessly — not improvised under Sunday-night pressure.

That's the gap coaching closes: not more content, but the one sentence and the one plan behind everything you post.

This isn't for you if you're looking for a bigger content calendar. It's for owners ready to stop posting on impulse and build one story their marketing repeats everywhere, on brand, every time.

Key Takeaways

  • Name the problem. Write your customer's problem in their words before you write another post.
  • Be the guide. Let the customer be the hero of your marketing, not your business.
  • Pick one CTA. One clear next step per piece of content beats five scattered ones.
  • Build it once. A system you repeat beats content you improvise, every time.

You don't need to become a full-time marketer. You need one sentence, written properly once, that turns every post, email and page into the same consistent story. That's a weekend's work, not a rebrand.

If your marketing changes direction every time you have a spare hour, that's the first thing we fix — before you spend another dollar on ads.
